XML Technology Overview
(PDF 2.82MB)

As the Internet matures, we are seeing a move to building web sites that are more sophisticated. The advantages of separating the presentation layer from the content layer are enormous. Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology is proving to deliver on this Promise. XML technology is also being embraced by companies and industries for the purpose of exchanging information. For example, the FDA has adopted XML as the backbone for delivery of the Electronic Common Technical Document (eCTD). The eCTD is the means by which drug companies can submit applications and required documentation for approval of a drug.

FileMaker has been using XML since version 5.0 and they continue to support and incorporate this technology into their products. FileMaker Pro® currently uses XML documents as Themes for creating custom layouts. In addition, FileMaker Pro® 6.0 can import, export and return XML in response to HTTP requests.

Luminous Solutions LLC is embracing XML technology as a core tool for exchanging information with other inflammation management systems.

Some existing technologies provide an easy, yet powerful, way to integrate FileMaker Pro® data with the web. Tag based language such as CDML or LDML (Lasso®) are mature technologies that can be employed to achieve your integration needs. Using these technologies in conjunction with a scripting language like JavaScript for field validation, provides a great solution for web based data access.

A web browser is not the only way to connect remotely to your database. Your database can also be deployed to connect directly to a remotely hosted database.

Cross platform barriers are not an issue when using a browser to deploy your solution. Access through your browser or directly to the database is achieved independent of whether you are using a Windows® operating system or Mac OS®.
